X-Ponts Pierre Conference: How many new homes will France need by 2030 and 2050?
X-Ponts Pierre and its partners are pleased to invite you to the first conference in a multi-year cycle of events dedicated to housing from 2025.
"How much new housing will be needed in France between now and 2030 and 2050?
Wednesday, January 15, 2025
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The conference will be held at the Maison des Ponts
42 rue Boissière Paris (16th)
and online at ZOOM
The question of the need for housing is a high-stakes one, given that positions on the subject can differ and influence the policies of major public and private housing players in very contrasting ways, depending on the projections adopted. It has been revived by the legislative activity undertaken by the previous government following the CNR Logement, and remains topical in the current housing crisis.
The objectives of reducing CO2 emissions and preserving natural and agricultural areas are leading some to advocate a drastic reduction in new housing construction. The creation of new households remains dynamic in France, while the Fondation Abbé Pierre counts over a million people without their own place to live.
There are two ways of producing primary residences: firstly, by building new homes, and secondly, by converting existing buildings into primary residences (vacant dwellings, second homes, unoccupied offices, etc.), which is less resource-intensive and for which some people have high expectations.
Will demographic growth and the reduction in household size continue? How many more primary residences will be needed in France in the short and medium term (2030 and 2050) to meet the needs of new households and the under-housed? How many new homes will need to be built to achieve this? What contribution can be expected from reducing the number of unoccupied homes and converting non-residential buildings into housing?
The ambition of the next X-Ponts Pierre conference is to provide some answers to these questions.
The event will feature four guest speakers, all experts in housing markets and policies:
Bernard Coloos, consultant, was director of economic, financial and international affairs at the Fédération Française du Bâtiment and associate professor in the master's program in urban planning at IEP Paris.
Michel Vivinis, consultant, was a partner at BIPE/BDO, in charge of the "Construction & Real Estate" division.
