Mentoring #3: How does mentoring work?
Mentor and mentee commit to each other for a minimum of 6 months (renewable once, up to 12 months). Exchanges are regular, preferably face-to-face whenever possible.
The mentee decides the pace of the meetings and the subject to be discussed at each appointment.
Confidentiality is the basic rule of the mentoring relationship: the mentee must be able to open up to the mentor and share his or her questions and doubts in complete confidence.
Mentor and mentee are equals, moving forward together as they go. Neither is accountable to the other. Exchanges are friendly, based on questioning, active listening and the sharing of resources, experience and networks.
