Becoming a mentor is an enriching human adventure. Sharing your experience and passing on your knowledge has unsuspected repercussions not only on your self-esteem, but also on your identity as a leader and your personal sense of effectiveness as a leader. This is the conclusion of a 2020 study by researchers Mostafa Ayoobzadeh and Kathleen Boies from Concordia University in Canada.

Mentoring is all about sharing wisdom: career lessons, practical advice, feedback, knowledge sharing... As a mentor, you contribute to your mentee's professional development and success. You have an impact on his or her professional development: you are an encounter that can change the game for him or her, and help him or her realize a project that is close to his or her heart.

Passing on your knowledge is a rewarding posture, enabling you to consolidate your expertise and put into practice your leadership skills such as negotiation, communication, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills and problem-solving. Stimulating, encouraging and supporting your mentee are all opportunities to have a positive impact on her professional development and strengthen your identity as a leader.
