About wise management: Wisdom is regarded as a virtue both by the ancient Greeks and the great ancient Chinese philosophers: Lao Tzu, Confucius and Mencius. They hold wisdom to be a morally excellent attribute of character, a prime virtue. The recent rise in interest in the relevance of Confucianism and Daoism to management illustrates the desire in China to develop a distinctly Chinese management style. Stan Shih, the founder of the Acer Group, is explicit about his Wang Dao management philosophy with its distinctly meritocratic and virtuous approach for wise and effective leadership. Professor Thompson's Wisdom Project asked 91 Chinese executives and 94 Western executives how they understood wisdom and its role in management. As business executives, we like to feel we are smart in facing challenges. But the stories of smart people failing or even being foolish are all around us - maybe in our own life stories too. So, could a greater focus on developing wisdom in management help us? What does wisdom really mean in practice? What could it add to the managerial decision-making process? East-West philosophies - are they relevant?
