Club Oenologie session: Corsica: Southern Burgundy?
Organised by "Oenology"
(September 28 meeting postponed to October 17)
Over the last 10 to 15 years, Corsican viticulture has seen the emergence of a new generation of winemakers, inspired by Burgundian methods and a return to the history of terroir and grape varieties.
Now fully mature, the best of them are producing top-of-the-range wines of great personality, in stark contrast to the classic image of "paillotte" wines.
For the September 28 tasting, I've selected 8 wines that are highly atypical of the standard, highlighting the terroirs and historic grape varieties of Corsica's finest winemakers. Made from ancient grape varieties, they often don't even qualify for the Vin de Corse appellation.
So, no chilled rosé, but nuggets that, especially in red, are on a par with the quality of the great Burgundies.
