About the conference theme:
The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth's surface. The ocean is the world's largest producer of oxygen, but also the world's largest absorber of carbon dioxide, at the cost of its acidification. It also stores 93% of the excess energy caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. France had argued for the inclusion of the ocean issue in COP21, which was a departure from previous climate negotiations, and it is now included in the Paris Agreement. In line with this, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be devoting one of its forthcoming special reports to oceans and ice.
The ocean is an essential cog in our climate machine, but it is also at the heart of operational issues such as maritime surveillance (tracking pollutants, rescue operations, offshore activities, etc.), the marine and coastal environment, and the control and management of marine resources.
Whether it's a question of anticipating changes in the ocean over the next century, knowing "what the ocean will be like tomorrow"ocean observation, data assimilation and modeling are essential to better understand how the ocean works. Oceanography is a relatively young and fast-developing science, and the scientific community faces many challenges in advancing our knowledge. The aim of this evening's event is to take stock of the current challenges and the obstacles to be overcome in the coming years.
